BESIDES ITS MANY NATURAL ASSETS, THE BAHAMAS TOO HAS MANY INTERESTING LANDMARKS & THINGS TO GET INTO. MAKE IT A PLAY DAY OR A DAY OF LEARNING BUT NO MATTER WHICH OF THEM YOU CHOOSE, BE SURE IT'S TOURIFFIC!

RUM CAKE FACTORY

THE BAHAMAS RUM CAKE FACTORY STORY BEGINS IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN NASSAU, BAHAMAS IN THE YEAR 2000. GEORGE BATES, ORIGINALLY FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM FOUNDED A RECIPE THAT WOULD INSPIRE HIS “ORIGINAL” RUM CAKE. EVERYONE LOVED HIS RECIPE SO MUCH THAT HE DECIDED TO OPEN A SMALL

RUM CAKE SHOP, A STORE THAT HAS SINCE THEN GROWN INTO THE MOST FAVOURITE BRAND OF RUM CAKE IN THE BAHAMAS. TODAY, THE BAHAMAS RUM CAKE FACTORY STILL SITS IN THE SAME LOCATION IT STARTED AT, AND HAS CREATED A CULTURE SO IRRESISTIBLY DELICIOUS THAT IN 2014 IT WAS RECOGNIZED BY THE STATE AS THE OFFICIAL RUM CAKE OF THE BAHAMAS. LOADED WITH OUR TOP-SECRET

INGREDIENTS, BAKED TO PERFECTION, AND GENTLY MARINATED IN OUR SIGNATURE BRAND OF OLE NASSAU BAHAMIAN RUM, OUR CAKES HAVE BECOME NOT JUST A DESSERT, BUT ALSO AN IMPORTANT PART OF A NEW LIFESTYLE FOR BOTH BAHAMIANS AND TOURISTS.

FORT MONTAGUE

FORT MONTAGU IS A SMALL FORT OF FOUR CANNONS ON THE EASTERN SHORELINE OF NEW PROVIDENCE ISLAND, BAHAMAS. PETER HENRY BRUCE OVERSAW THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FORT THAT BEGAN IN 1741 TO DEFEND THE BRITISH POSSESSION FROM SPANISH INVADERS. BUILT OUT OF LOCAL LIMESTONE, FORT MONTAGU IS THE OLDEST FORT STILL STANDING ON THE ISLAND OF NEW PROVIDENCE.

THE QUEENS STAIRASE

THE QUEEN'S STAIRCASE, COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS THE 66 STEPS, IS A MAJOR LANDMARK THAT IS LOCATED IN THE FORT FINCASTLE HISTORIC COMPLEX IN NASSAU. IT WAS HEWN OUT OF SOLID LIMESTONE ROCK BY SLAVES BETWEEN 1793 AND 1794 AND IT IS SAID THAT IT PROVIDED A DIRECT ROUTE FROM FORT FINCASTLE TO NASSAU CITY. THESE STEPS WERE LATER NAMED IN HONOUR OF QUEEN VICTORIA, WHO REIGNED IN BRITAIN FOR 64 YEARS FROM 1837 TO 1901.

THERE ARE ONLY 65 STEPS VISIBLE BECAUSE THE PATHWAY THAT LEADS TO THE STEPS WAS PAVED AND THE BOTTOM STEP IS BURIED UNDER THE ASPHALT. GREAT PHOTO OPPORTUNITY.

FORT FINCASTLE

THIS FORT WAS CONSTRUCTED OF CUT LIMESTONE ROCK IN 1793 AND STRATEGICALLY PLACED ATOP BENNET'S HILL TO PROTECT HISTORIC NASSAU TOWN AND ITS HARBOUR; IT

WAS BUILT UNDER THE GOVERNORSHIP OF JOHN MURRAY, ALSO CALLED VISCOUNT FINCASTLE, IN THE SHAPE OF A PADDLE-WHEEL STEAMER.

THE FORT OVERLOOKED NASSAU AND PARADISE ISLAND AND THE EASTERN APPROACHES TO NEW PROVIDENCE. IT MOUNTED TWO 24-POUNDERS, TWO 32-POUNDERS, TWO 12-

POUNDER CANNONS AND ONE HOWITZER AND SERVED AS A LIGHTHOUSE UNTIL SEPTEMBER 1817 WHEN IT WAS REPLACED BY THE LIGHTHOUSE ON PARADISE ISLAND (AND WAS

SUBSEQUENTLY USED AS A SIGNAL STATION).

RAWSON SQUARE

RAWSON SQUARE LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN NASSAU, IS THE GATEWAY TO THE CITY FOR CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS. THE SQUARE WAS NAMED AFTER SIR RAWSON W. RAWSON, WHO WAS GOVERNOR OF THE

BAHAMAS DURING THE LATE 1860S. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SQUARE IS A BRONZE BUST OF SIR MILO BUTLER, THE FIRST BAHAMIAN GOVERNOR GENERAL IN AN INDEPENDENT BAHAMAS. A FOUNTAIN IN THE

SQUARE WAS NAMED FOR SIR STAFFORD SANDS, THE FIRST BAHAMIAN MINISTER OF TOURISM. DURING THE BAHAMAS QUINCENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS IN 1992, A MONUMENT WAS ERECTED IN RAWSON SQUARE BY THE BAHAMAS ASSOCIATION OF LAND SURVEYORS IN HONOR OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS LANDFALL.
